Hi, and welcome to Day 2 of  “Internet Marketing for Small Businesses 101”.

This is a free class for beginners showing you actionable bite-size ways to improve your presence online, get more traffic for your website and get more customers. This class was designed for small business owners who want to take charge of their own internet marketing.

Your Product or Service

The first step in internet marketing is understanding what your product or service is and why your customers would want to buy it.  Put yourself in your customer’s shoes and think about how using your product or service would benefit your customer.

Instead of focusing on what your customer can do for you, think about what you can do for the customer.

“What’s in it for me?” said every customer ever.

The answer to this question is your value proposition.  Once you figure this out, always keep it in mind in all your marketing efforts, whether online or offline.

Elevator Speech

Let’s say, you got into an elevator and there was an important person there.  They ask you what you do.  What would you say?  You only have  30 seconds to two minutes, or about the length of an elevator ride to say what you have to say.

An elevator speech is a short summary of your business, product or service.  This should include a value proposition for the customer, or “What’s in it for me”?

You can use this elevator speech anywhere, in real life as well as in marketing your website online.

Task for the day

Every lesson, we’ll give you a few actionable tasks that you can accomplish very quickly.  This shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes and should get you closer to your internet marketing goal!

  • On a piece of paper or on your computer, write down:
    • Your value proposition.  “What’s in it for me?”
    • Your elevator speech (with value proposition).
  • Add your elevator speech (with value proposition) to your first post.

Extra Credit

For the super-achievers, here’s some optional things you can do:

  • Visit your website and see it from your customer’s perspective.  
    Does the text of your website talk more about your business or does it talk more about what you can do for your customer?
  • If you are able to edit your website, add your elevator speech (with value proposition) to your home page.
  • Pick a few pages of your website and add your elevator speech (with value proposition) to them. You can vary the wordings to better match the web page.
